Avenza Maps

Avenza Maps is a powerful app for Android and iOS devices that provides a variety of tools for use with georeferenced maps both online and offline. This section will provide an overview of the app which allows you to get started.

Getting Started

Import Map

When the Avenza Maps app is opened, the default screen is known as the 'Maps List’. This displays any maps that you have downloaded or imported as well as various icons and tabs for navigating around the app.

av-1.pngTo import the map to the app, tap the plus “+” button at the bottom right of the app.

For Android devices - Tap the ‘+’ icon in the lower right corner, and select “Download or import a map.

For iOS devices - Tap the ‘+’ icon.

The list of the map will be empty, you have to choose the appropriate import location.

Navigate to the desired file, in this case, the file is “maps.pdf” and select it. Tap Import. The map will now be added to the Maps List.

av-4.pngThe map's title, publisher, distance, and direction from your current location are displayed. In place of distance and direction, you may see "On map" displayed, which signifies that you are currently located within the extent/coverage of that map.

Import Layer

After you imported the map to the app, you fulfill the requirement to start marking the plots on the app.

First, tap the desired map. It will open the map on the app.

Then add the layer data, tap the "Layers" tab.

Tap the download button.

In the import layers option, check the “Import Schema Only” box.

Choose the option “Cloud storage or device.”

av-10.pngChoose the appropriate import location. Navigate to the desired file, in this case, the file is “Chronicle Avenza Format.kml” and select it.

Mark The Plots

To start marking the plots, first, you have to set the layer active.

On the layer library, hold the “Chronicle Avenza Format” file until the checklist symbol appears. Then tap the pen/pencil symbol to edit the layer.

av-13.pngOn the edit layer menu, turn the “Set To Current Layer” on.

You are ready to mark a plot. Get back to the map display to start marking the plots.

On the maps, you can move the pointer by dragging it using your finger, and zooming in or zooming out.

To mark the headstone/plot, tap the mark point button.

The app will take you to the “add placemark” menu. In this menu, you can fill in the information about the plot id of the plot, the name of the interment, the date of birth, the date of death, comments/info, and the photo of the headstone or the plot.

To add the headstone/plot photo, tap the “Photos +add” option. It will take you to the photo menu. There are two options to add the photo.

  1. To take the photo using your camera device through this app, tap the camera symbol.

  2. Import the existing photo from your device, tap the photo symbol

Entering the interment information. After you finished, tap the checklist button on the top right corner.

av-18.pngThe changes will reflect on the map (Placemark 1). Repeat the step to add another plot (Placemark 2).

After you finished, the next step is to export the data so you can send it to us. To export the data, first tap the layers tab.

Then tap the menu button, and choose the export layers option.

av-20.pngOn the export menu, tap the image size button and choose the large/original size button.

av-21.pngTo export, tap the export tab button ton the bottom right of the display.

av-22.pngChoose the desired export location on your device and the name of the export file.
